Music in Me
By Jacqui Ogle, Houston, TX

Honestly?

Music is a major part of my life. It influences everything I do from a day to day basis. Why is that? Because music is relatable. Music can twist and turn and stir your emotions, no matter who you are. Have you had trouble with life? There are thousands of songs for you. Are you struggling with depression? Tons of encouraging verses are out there. Have you had trouble with your parents? Have you battled anorexia? Are you trying to figure out the meaning of life? Have you been backstabbed by a friend? I can honestly say that almost every musician out there has experienced the same pains as you, and then proceeded to turn their pains into a song. It’s almost as if the song was written for you.

To me, music is a lifestyle. It's in me. I can feel it all around me. I can hear it in everything. Everytime I turn on Switchfoot or Cursive or Anberlin, I can hear the tempo in my thoughts and understand the message just as much as if I’d been to an hour-long seminar for college. With every song, it's as if I have this huge community right beside me - a community that is coming together to make a difference. It's beautiful, scary, enormous, and life-changing all at the same time.

Call me a music freak, call me whatever. Music has changed me for the better. A band called Switchfoot, in particular, has changed me for the better. Every time I hear their songs, I just feel better. I battled depression and self-mutilation for a year or two, and the one thing that was music therapy to me was a Switchfoot song. I don’t know where I would be without those 5 guys (and their techies, photographer, families, etc.). They’ve helped me fight my toughest battles. They’ve also inspired me to write, play, and think deeply.

If it weren’t for music, I’d be somewhere that I can barely bring myself to think about.
