STAND UP! Live Art, Music, and activism in SD
On February 8, 2008 Jedidiah and thegluenetwork.com rallied their friends, family and the local community of San Diego to STAND UP for homeless youth across the US. Hosted by the Airport Lounge in downtown San Diego's hip neighborhood of Little Italy, STAND UP was a night of live art, music, and social awareness intended to raise money for Stand Up For Kids(a non-profit organization that exists to empower homeless and at-risk youth toward life-long personal growth).
Upon entering, attendees were invited to donate their old cell phones to SUFK and have their picture taken while sharing their "imagine if..." Some responses were sincere and heartfelt, while others were light-hearted and witty. Check out the "imagine if..." slideshow here.
The Airport Lounge proved to be a perfect venue to host the event. Braille, Theory Hazit, Ohmega Watts, and DJ Trent Dean pumped out the jams as slides were projected on the blank white walls of the the posh airport reminiscent inside bar. The main attraction was outside where a slew of artists including Kelli Murray of Jedidiah, Johnny Rodriguez of KMDZ, Ekundayo, Pancho, Eukarezt and many others contributed to a 16' X 8' mural. The walls in the outside courtyard were laced with artwork from the Ground Up Pirates, an artist collective from Hawaii who made the trek out from the Islands to participate in the event.
At the end of the night 40 cell phones were collected and $3,910 was raised for the San Diego Chapter of Stand Up For Kids.
The mural is up for auction through thegluenetwork.com and the starting bid is $6,000.00 To place a bid email info@thegluenetwork.com For more on Stand Up for Kids visit their site.
